Once upon a time, in a cozy little village, there lived a dog known for his insatiable hunger. This dog was always looking for something to eat.
One sunny day, as the dog strolled past the local butcher’s shop, his eyes caught sight of something wonderful. There it was, a big, fat, juicy bone!
The dog’s mouth watered at the sight. “Yummy! I would love to eat that big juicy bone,” he thought to himself.
Seizing the opportunity when the butcher turned away, the dog darted into the shop, snatched the bone with his paws, and ran off as fast as his legs could carry him. The butcher, catching a glimpse of the fleeing dog, shouted, “Stop! Thief! Stop!”
The village baker, hearing the commotion, emerged from his bakery. “What’s going on? What’s happened?” he asked in alarm.
“The dog stole my bone! Help me chase him and get it back,” pleaded the butcher. So, the butcher and the baker set off after the dog, shouting, “Stop! Thief! Stop!”
Their pursuit was joined by the postman, who added his voice to the chorus. Despite their efforts, the dog proved too fast and agile for them. In a comedic turn of events, the butcher, trying to leap at the dog, missed and fell to the ground, with the baker and postman tumbling atop him.
“I’m the fastest dog in the village – they will never catch me,” boasted the dog, now far ahead of his pursuers.
Eventually, feeling safe, the dog slowed down to savor his prize. But his peace was short-lived. A fox approached him, eyeing the bone. “What a tasty bone you have there. Why don’t you share it with me? I’m very hungry,” the fox pleaded.
The dog growled in response, “No.” This scene repeated itself with a squirrel and some rabbits, each asking for a share of the bone and each being turned away by the dog’s growls.
Continuing his journey, the dog reached a river with a small bridge. As he crossed, he looked down into the water and saw his own reflection. Mistaking it for another dog with a bigger bone, he greedily barked, “Give me that bone!” In doing so, he dropped his own bone into the river.
For a moment, the dog watched the other ‘dog’ lose its bone as well and looked like he was going to cry. It took him a while to realize that he was staring at his own reflection. “I’m a greedy dog,” he said with regret.
And so, the storytellers concluded together, “The moral of the story is we should be satisfied with what we have.” The dog learned that his greed had cost him his cherished prize, a lesson he would not soon forget.
