How the Leopard got his Spots

The following story is based on “How the Leopard got his Spots” from “Just so Stories” by Rudyard Kipling.

In a vast, sandy land called the High Veldt, where everything was the color of sun-baked earth, lived a leopard without spots. This leopard was so good at blending in that no one could ever spot him coming, not even his friends, the giraffe, zebra, eland, and wildebeest.

One sunny day, a hunter arrived. He looked around and said, “Hey, Leopard! We’re both the same sandy color. Let’s team up for hunting!”

Leopard thought it was a splendid idea. “I’ll use my sharp claws, and you use your bow and arrow,” he replied with a grin.

Together, they made an unbeatable team. This, however, made life difficult for their friends.

“Oh dear,” sighed Giraffe one day, “we can’t even see them coming. What will we do?”

“Don’t worry,” said Zebra, always full of ideas. “I know a magical forest with lots of shadows. Let’s move there. They won’t find us among the stripes and spots of light!”

So, off they went to the magical forest. After a while, they noticed something incredible. Their skins had changed to match their new home!

“Wow, look at my stripes!” Zebra exclaimed, admiring how he blended into the dappled light.

“And my skin has blotches just like the sun shining through the leaves,” Giraffe added with a laugh.

Meanwhile, Leopard and the hunter were puzzled by the sudden disappearance of their friends.

“Where could they have gone?” Leopard wondered aloud.

“Let’s ask Baviaan. He’s wise and knows everything,” suggested the hunter.

Baviaan told them about the magical forest and gave them a piece of advice. “Leopard, you need spots to blend in there. And Hunter, you just need to change too.”

With Baviaan’s words in mind, they set off for the magical forest. But even in the forest, they couldn’t find their friends.

“This is odd,” Leopard mumbled. “I can smell Zebra, but where is he?”

At night, they played a clever trick and caught Zebra and Giraffe.

“Stay still!” Leopard ordered Zebra. “In the morning, we’ll see who you really are.”

When morning came, they were in for a surprise.

“What’s this?” Hunter scratched his head. “Giraffe, you’ve got blotches!”

“And Zebra, you’re striped!” Leopard was equally baffled.

Zebra chuckled. “That’s right! Now we can hide perfectly here. You’ll never catch us again!”

Feeling inspired, the hunter decided to change his skin to a dark brown to hide better. Leopard, feeling left out, asked, “What about me?”

“I have an idea,” said the hunter. He dipped his fingers in some paint and dotted Leopard’s skin with spots.

“Now, you can hide just like the rest of us,” the hunter said, stepping back to admire his work.

Leopard looked at his new coat and couldn’t help but smile. “I love it! Now I can blend in with the rocks and trees!”

And that’s the story of how the leopard got his spots. From then on, all the animals could play and hide in the magical forest, each blending in perfectly with their new, beautiful home.
