The Fox and the Crow

Written by:

In a lush forest filled with the songs of birds and the rustling of leaves, there lived a crow who loved to search for food. One sunny day, as she flew over the green canopy, she spotted a delicious piece of cheese. She swooped down, grabbed it with her beak, and exclaimed, “What a lovely piece of cheese! I will keep it all for myself and not share it with anyone.”

Perching atop a tall tree, the crow was soon approached by various forest animals. First, a group of mice squeaked, asking her to share the cheese. But the crow refused. Then came dogs, who woofed their request, followed by cows mooing and horses neighing, each asking for a share. Yet, each time, the crow refused, determined to keep the cheese for herself.

As the disappointed animals left, a sly fox entered the scene. Spotting the cheese, he thought, “That cheese looks delicious, perfect for my breakfast.” The fox then approached the crow with a cunning plan.

“Good morning, Crow, you beautiful bird,” said the fox. The crow, suspicious at first, was soon swayed by the fox’s flattery. “All I want is to hear you sing,” the fox continued, “You must be the queen of all birds with a voice so beautiful.” Doubting herself, the crow hesitated, but the fox’s flattery was too tempting. “Wait, Fox, come back. I’ll show you how beautifully I can sing,” she called out.

As the crow opened her mouth to caw, the cheese fell right out of her beak and onto the ground. The fox quickly snatched it up, thanking the crow for her ‘generosity’. “Thanks very much, Crow, I tricked you,” he said slyly as he swallowed the cheese.

The fox then trotted into the woods, leaving the crow bewildered and cheese-less. She learned a valuable lesson that day: beware of those who flatter you, for their intentions might not be as kind as their words.

And so, the forest echoed with the storytellers’ moral: “Beware of people who flatter you,” a lesson the crow would never forget.
