The Cat and the Mouse

Written by:

In a big, ancient church with tall towers and deep shadows, a mouse and a cat made an unusual friendship. The mouse, naive and trusting, lived under the pulpit, while the cat, cunning and sly, made her bed in the vestry. They decided to live together in the bell tower, believing it would be cozier and safer for both.

“To get through the cold winter, let’s buy a pot of fat and store it,” the mouse suggested one day, thinking of the future.

“What a smart idea!” exclaimed the cat, her mind already weaving plots. They hid their precious pot under the altar, confident in their preparation for the months ahead.

However, the cat had other plans. “Dear Mouse, I must attend my cousin’s kitten’s christening. I’ll be back soon,” she lied, sneaking off to feast on their stored fat.

Upon her return, the mouse curiously inquired, “How was the christening?”

“Oh, wonderful! The kitten’s named ‘Top Off,’” the cat lied smoothly, licking her lips at the memory of the stolen fat.

This deceit continued, with the cat inventing more christenings and consuming the pot of fat bit by bit, each time returning with a fanciful name for a nonexistent kitten.

Winter finally arrived, and the mouse, eager to taste their stored fat, was met with a shocking discovery. The pot was empty, the christenings were all lies, and the names—Top Off, Half Empty, All Gone—were part of the cat’s deceit.

“You’ve tricked me!” the mouse cried, feeling betrayed and foolish.

The cat, unrepentant, simply replied, “I’m always hungry, dear Mouse. And now, you seem like a tempting treat.”

But the mouse, though small, was quick. She dashed away, narrowly escaping the cat’s clutches, and vowed, “I will never trust cats again!”

As the mouse hid safely in her hole, she reflected on her narrow escape and the lessons learned. Through their dialogues and the unfolding events, the story teaches the importance of caution and wisdom in choosing friends, highlighting that appearances can be deceiving, and trust must be earned.
