Once upon a time, in a far-off land, there lived a farmer and his wife who were not kind to their animals. The farmer would yell at the dog for being lazy, and the farmer’s wife would scold the cat for sleeping too much. They even talked about getting rid of the old donkey and making stew out of the rooster.
One evening, the rooster heard them planning to cook him for dinner. He was so upset that he crowed loudly, confusing the other animals. The dog, cat, and donkey came over to see what was wrong. When they heard about the rooster’s fate, they were all shocked and sad.
The animals decided they had had enough of being treated poorly. The donkey had a brilliant idea: “Let’s run away to Bremen and become musicians!” he suggested. The rooster agreed immediately, and so they planned to leave that very night.
Together, the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster sneaked away from the farm and headed towards Bremen. But as they traveled through the woods, they grew cold and hungry. Luckily, they spotted a light from a little cottage and decided to ask for shelter.
Peering through the window, they saw a feast on the table and four robbers counting their stolen money. The animals were envious and wished they could be inside, eating the delicious food by the warm fire.
The donkey had another clever plan. He suggested they scare the robbers away by making a lot of noise. So, they stacked up on each other: the dog on the donkey, the cat on the dog, and the rooster on the cat. Then, on the count of three, they all made their loudest noises. The robbers were terrified, thinking they were being attacked by a monster. They ran away as fast as they could, leaving everything behind.
The animals then enjoyed the feast and settled down by the fire, warm and content. Meanwhile, the robbers, cold and hungry, debated going back. But after one tried and was scared off again by the animals, they decided never to return.
Thanks to their bravery and teamwork, the animals lived happily in the cottage, enjoying all the food and money left by the robbers. They never made it to Bremen, but they found a new home where they were safe and loved. And they all lived luxuriously ever after.
