Long ago in a Ireland, there lived a kind king named Lir. He had a happy family with his queen and their four children: Fionnuala, Aodh, Con, and Fiachra. They loved playing and laughing together.
Sadly, one day, the queen got very sick and passed away. The king and the children were very sad. King Lir decided to marry again, hoping to find a new mother for his children. He married Aoife, but she wasn’t kind like their first mother.
Aoife was jealous of the children and wanted the king all to herself. She thought of a mean plan and took the children to a lake. With a wave of her hand, she used magic to turn them into swans!
Fionnuala, now a swan, cried out, “Aoife, what have you done to us?”
Aoife replied, “You’ll be swans for nine hundred years. Only the sound of a church bell can change you back.”
King Lir found his children turned into swans. He was heartbroken but stayed by the lake to be close to them. Even as swans, the children still loved their father very much.
Years went by, and the swans lived on the lake, the stormy sea, and finally a warm island. They missed being humans but stayed together, always hopeful.
One day, they heard a beautiful sound. It was a church bell, something new and magical in their land. A kind old man named Caomhóg found the swans and listened to their story. Understanding their sadness, he blessed them with holy water.
As the bell rang, the swans turned back into humans. But they were very, very old because of the long curse. They hugged each other, happy to be together again as a family.
With their last breath, they whispered, “We’re finally free.”
And in that moment, they passed away peacefully, ready to meet their mother and father again in a beautiful place beyond the stars.
This story teaches us about love, bravery, and hope. Even when things seem very hard, staying together and caring for each other is the most powerful magic of all.
