In a magical kingdom filled with adventure and mystery, a young boy named Donal lived with a very special dream. Unlike other boys who dreamed of becoming knights or explorers, Donal wished to become a barber. He loved the idea of cutting and styling hair, making people look their very best. However, there was a dark shadow over this dream. In Donal’s kingdom, a strange and fearsome rule existed. Every barber who was summoned to the king’s palace to cut his hair mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. This terrifying fact made everyone in the kingdom, including Donal’s mother, deeply worried about the fate of the barbers.
Despite the grim stories and his mother’s concerns, Donal grew up to be an exceptional barber, known far and wide for his skillful hands and creative haircuts. His reputation eventually reached the king, who decided he needed Donal to give him a haircut. When the king’s servants arrived at Donal’s doorstep with the royal summons, fear gripped everyone’s heart. Donal’s mother, in particular, was struck with panic, fearing she might never see her son again if he went to the palace.
Donal’s mother didn’t sit back in despair; instead, she took action. She rushed to the palace, tears streaming down her face, pleading for her son’s life. Her cries echoed through the grand halls, but the king had a secret that made him indifferent to her pleas. He had donkey ears hidden under his crown, a secret so embarrassing that he believed it justified the disappearance of every barber who learned of it.
But the sight of a mother’s love and the sound of her unyielding cries touched even the king’s heart. He made a deal with Donal, offering him a chance to live if he promised never to reveal the secret of the donkey ears. Donal agreed, feeling the weight of the promise on his shoulders. Cutting the king’s hair, he discovered the royal secret but kept his word, not breathing a word of it to anyone.
However, the secret haunted Donal. It filled his nights with nightmares and his days with a heavy heart. Observing her son’s torment, Donal’s mother came up with a wise solution. “If you can’t share your burden with a person, why not confide in nature?” she suggested. “Tell your secret to a tree. It won’t reveal it to anyone.” Donal found comfort in his mother’s words and decided to confide in a grand old tree by the lake. Whispering the secret to the tree lifted the heavy cloud from his heart, and he felt light and free for the first time since his visit to the palace.
But fate had a twist in store. A harpist, seeking wood to craft a new harp, chose the very tree that held Donal’s secret. When he played his newly made harp in the king’s court, the harp sang out the secret for all to hear: “The king has donkey ears.” The secret was out, and the king’s fears were realized before his entire court.
Yet, the reaction was not what the king had dreaded. Instead of mockery or scorn, the people of the court offered him words of comfort and understanding. “Having donkey ears is no reason for shame. We all have things about ourselves we wish were different,” they said, embracing their king with kindness and acceptance.
The king, moved by the love and acceptance of his people, realized the folly of his ways. He declared that no barber should ever again fear for their life after serving the king. Donal was named the royal barber, a position of great honor and trust. Donal’s mother beamed with pride, her heart full of joy and relief.
Donal and his mother learned that secrets shared with love and trust can lead to healing and acceptance. The kingdom, too, learned a valuable lesson about compassion and understanding, making it a brighter, kinder place for all who lived there. And as for Donal, he not only became the most famous barber in the land but also a symbol of courage and the power of speaking one’s truth, even if it’s just to a tree by the lake.
