The Journey of the Kind-hearted Beggar
Once upon a time, in a land filled with magic and wisdom, lived a beggar man. Every day, he would sit by the roadside, relying on the kindness of passersby for food. He felt fortunate for the generosity of strangers, yet his life was about to change in ways he could never have imagined.
One evening, as he settled down to sleep, a sneaky mouse crept up and stole his food. “Why do you take my food?” the beggar asked, saddened by his loss. The mouse replied, “I’m doing you a favor. You’re not meant to own more than eight items, as decided by the Buddha.”
Intrigued and confused, the beggar decided to seek out the Buddha to understand why this limit was set upon him. Packing his few belongings, he embarked on a journey that would lead him to wisdom and unexpected friendships.
As night approached, cold and hungry, he found a welcoming home. The family inside, seeing his need, offered him shelter and food. They also had a request: for the beggar to ask the Buddha how their daughter could find her voice, as she had never spoken.
Continuing his quest, the beggar encountered a wizard who helped him cross a great mountain range with magic. In return, the wizard asked the beggar to inquire of the Buddha how he could ascend to heaven, a goal after a thousand years of trying.
Crossing a vast river with the aid of a giant turtle, the beggar promised to ask the Buddha why the turtle had not yet become the dragon he longed to be, despite 500 years of waiting.
Finally, before the Buddha, the beggar realized he could only ask three questions. He chose to forsake his own in favor of those who had helped him along his way.
The Buddha’s answers were simple yet profound:
- The turtle must leave his shell to become a dragon.
- The wizard must lay down his staff to reach heaven.
- The silent daughter would speak upon meeting her soulmate.
Returning home, the beggar conveyed these answers. The turtle, shedding his shell, transformed into a magnificent dragon, leaving behind pearls as a gift. The wizard, abandoning his staff, ascended to heaven, bestowing the staff upon the beggar. And finally, upon the beggar’s return, the daughter spoke for the first time, recognizing her soulmate in him.
This tale teaches us the power of kindness, selflessness, and the unexpected journeys that lead us to discover our true destinies.
