Crossing a vast river with the aid of a giant turtle, the beggar promised to ask the Buddha why the turtle had not yet become the dragon he longed to be, despite 500 years of waiting.

Finally, before the Buddha, the beggar realized he could only ask three questions. He chose to forsake his own in favor of those who had helped him along his way.

The Buddha’s answers were simple yet profound:

• The turtle must leave his shell to become a dragon.
• The wizard must lay down his staff to reach heaven.
• The silent daughter would speak upon meeting her soulmate.

The wizard, abandoning his staff, ascended to heaven, bestowing the staff upon the beggar. And finally, upon the beggar’s return, the daughter spoke for the first time, recognizing her soulmate in him.
