One chilly evening, as swallows prepared to fly to warmer lands, one little swallow fell in love with a beautiful reed and decided to stay behind. When his love proved unfaithful, the swallow, heartbroken, sought shelter at the feet of the Happy Prince. There, he discovered the statue was weeping, not because of rain, but from sadness upon seeing the suffering of the people below.
The Happy Prince asked the swallow to help him assist the poor. With reluctance but a growing sense of duty, the swallow plucked the ruby from the statue’s sword to aid a mother and her feverish son, then a sapphire from an eye to support a young writer, and finally, the other sapphire eye to help a little Match Girl.
As winter approached, the Happy Prince asked the swallow to strip him of his gold leaf by leaf, to give to the needy. The swallow did as asked, distributing the gold to the poor, warming their hearts and filling the city with laughter and joy.
But the cold was too much for the little swallow. Knowing his end was near, he bid farewell to the Happy Prince with a kiss. At that moment, the statue’s lead heart broke in two out of love and sorrow for his friend.
The town councillors, upon seeing the statue’s dilapidated state and the dead swallow at its feet, decided to take down the statue, deeming it no longer beautiful. They melted the statue, but the Happy Prince’s heart did not melt. It was thrown away, alongside the swallow, uniting them in their final resting place, a testament to their incredible journey of love, sacrifice, and compassion.
