Once upon a time, in a beautiful kingdom under the shimmering full moon, a baby boy was born to a king and a queen. They named him Prince Siddhartha. A wise man visited them and said, “This boy will be either a great king or a wise leader who teaches about love and kindness.”
The king thought, “I don’t want my son to leave the palace and become a wanderer.” So, the king and queen decided to keep Siddhartha inside the palace, away from any sadness or pain, hoping he’d never want to leave.
But as Siddhartha grew up, he became curious about the world outside. “What lies beyond our walls?” he wondered. One day, he asked his servant to take him outside. As they rode through the city, Siddhartha saw things he had never imagined.
First, he met an old woman who was bent and had no teeth. “Why do you look like this?” he asked. “I am old,” she replied. Siddhartha was surprised because he had never seen anyone old before.
Then, he saw an old man who was very sick. “What’s wrong?” Siddhartha asked. “I am waiting to die,” the man said. Siddhartha felt sad and confused.
He also saw a family crying because their son had died. This made Siddhartha think deeply about life and death.
Lastly, he met a beggar who, despite having nothing, was happy. “How can you be happy?” Siddhartha asked. The beggar replied, “I am at peace.” This made Siddhartha think that being happy doesn’t come from having things.
Siddhartha decided he needed to find out how to be truly happy and at peace. So, he left the palace wearing simple clothes and said goodbye to his old life.
He met five men who thought that being very uncomfortable could help them understand life better. Siddhartha tried this but realized it didn’t help him find the answers he was looking for.
One day, a kind woman saw Siddhartha looking very weak and gave him some food. After eating, Siddhartha felt much better and thanked the woman. He realized that hurting himself wasn’t the way to find happiness.
Siddhartha sat under a big, beautiful tree and decided not to move until he understood how to be truly happy. A naughty demon named Mara tried to stop Siddhartha by sending storms and trying to scare him, but Siddhartha wasn’t afraid. Mara even asked his daughter to dance and try to distract Siddhartha, but that didn’t work either.
Siddhartha realized that wanting too many things can make us sad. If we let go of wanting everything, we can be happy. With this thought, Siddhartha became the Buddha, which means “the one who knows.”
Buddha wanted to share what he learned with everyone. He taught about being kind, not wanting too much, and how to be truly happy. He told people about the importance of love and helping each other. And so, Buddha traveled, teaching his message of peace and happiness to all who would listen.
