In a lush, green jungle filled with chattering birds and rustling leaves, there lived a wise buffalo who was once the Buddha himself. This buffalo was unlike any other; with his strong muscles and commanding presence, he was respected by all the animals in the jungle. Despite his fearsome appearance, he was known for his compassion and wisdom.
“I may look fierce, but deep down, I’m kind and wise,” the buffalo would say, a gentle smile on his face.
One day, a playful monkey spotted the buffalo. “Ah, there’s the buffalo everyone fears. But I know he’s gentle at heart. It’s time for some fun!” the monkey thought with a mischievous grin.
Without hesitation, the monkey leaped onto the buffalo’s back, grabbed his horns, and shouted, “Giddy up, horsey!”
The buffalo sighed, “You do know I’m a buffalo, not a horse, right?”
“Of course! But this is fun,” the monkey chuckled, enjoying his little game.
Whenever the buffalo went to the lake to drink, the monkey would play another trick by covering the buffalo’s eyes, causing him to stumble into the river. Despite these pranks, the buffalo never showed anger, always maintaining his calm demeanor.
Every night, the monkey would wake the buffalo from his sleep, yet the buffalo remained patient, never scolding the monkey.
Curious about the buffalo’s unending patience, a little mouse from the jungle approached him one day. “Buffalo, you’re so strong, yet you let the monkey play tricks on you without getting angry. Why is that?” asked the mouse, puzzled.
“My dear mouse,” the buffalo replied, “anger never leads to happiness. The monkey, in fact, is doing me a favor by helping me practice patience and compassion. With each trick he plays, I grow more peaceful inside.”
The mouse was confused. “But if you don’t stand up to him, won’t his tricks get worse? How is this a favor?”
“The true lesson here is in my patience. He might be a silly monkey, but he has a heart. And while no one else wants to be his friend because of his antics, he has helped me grow,” the buffalo explained, his voice filled with kindness.
Moved by the buffalo’s wisdom, the mouse thanked him and scampered away, hoping to learn patience as well.
Unknown to the buffalo, the monkey had been eavesdropping from behind a tree. Hearing the buffalo’s words, he was touched by the buffalo’s friendship and understanding.
Emerging from his hiding spot, the monkey approached the buffalo. “Thank you for being my friend,” he said, his eyes shining with gratitude. “I promise no more tricks on you or anyone else in the jungle.”
And so, the buffalo and the monkey hugged, sealing their friendship. From that day forward, the monkey kept his word, and the jungle was filled with a little more peace and understanding, all thanks to the magic of patience.
