Once upon a time in ancient Greece, there lived a beautiful woman named Pandora.

Pandora was very kind and curious. Her name meant “gift of all.” One day, the mighty god Zeus saw her and was amazed by her beauty.

“She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen,” Zeus thought.

Hera, Zeus’s wife, was not impressed. She said, “She is just a human, Zeus. She is not perfect.”

Zeus sighed, “Just leave her alone, Hera.”

But Hera had a plan. She found a box and filled it with all kinds of bad things: sorrow, mischief, sickness, sadness, and even death. Then she handed the box to Zeus.

Zeus opened the box and added one good thing: hope. He then gave the box back to Hera.

Hera walked up to Pandora and said, “Hello, Pandora. Take this box and take care of it. But you must never open it.”

Pandora was curious. “What’s inside?”

Hera replied, “Nothing that concerns you.”

Pandora took the box home. Every day, she looked at the beautiful box and wondered what was inside. She wanted so badly to open it but remembered Hera’s warning.

One day, she couldn’t resist any longer.

“It is so hard looking at this box every day,” she thought. “Maybe just a tiny peek won’t hurt.”

So, Pandora opened the lid. Suddenly, sorrow, mischief, sickness, sadness, and death flew out of the box! Pandora quickly shut the lid, but it was too late. All the bad things were already out.

“Oh no, what have I done?” Pandora cried. “I have let all the evils out into the world.”

Then she heard a small knocking noise coming from the box.

“What’s that?” she wondered.

A tiny voice said, “Let me out. I am hope, the only good thing in the box.”

Pandora opened the box again, and hope came out, shining brightly. It chased away some of the sadness and sickness, making things a little better.

Zeus saw what had happened and said to Hera, “You were right. Pandora is not perfect, but you need to stop playing tricks on humans.”

Hera smiled and said, “I’ve only just started.”

And so, even though Pandora had let out many bad things into the world, she also released hope, which stayed with people forever, helping them through tough times.
