Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there was a powerful god named Zeus. Zeus was the king of all the gods and he had a son named Hercules. Hercules was very strong and brave, and Zeus loved him very much.
But Zeus’s wife, Hera, was not Hercules’ mother. In fact, she did not like that Zeus adored Hercules. She was very jealous.
“I hate that Hercules so much,” Hera said to herself. “He takes all my husband’s love and time. I have a plan that will finish him once and for all.”
One day, Hera invited Hercules to a feast.
“Hercules, you must come and eat with us,” Hera said sweetly.
“Thank you, Hera,” Hercules replied.
They sat down and ate the food. But little did Hercules know, Hera had poisoned it. That night, the poison made Hercules go mad, and in his madness, he accidentally hurt his own family.
When Hercules realized what he had done, he was heartbroken.
“What have I done? I’ve hurt my family! Father, please help me!” Hercules cried out to Zeus.
Zeus was very sad and disappointed. “What you have done is unimaginable. To make up for it, you must go to King Eurystheus. He will set you ten tasks. All of which must be completed.”
Hercules set off to find King Eurystheus. When he arrived, the king gave him his first task.
“Your first task is to defeat the Nemean Lion and bring back its skin,” King Eurystheus said.
As Hercules traveled to find the lion, he met some villagers.
“Where are you off to, Hercules?” one villager asked.
“I’m going to defeat the lion,” Hercules replied.
“No one has ever managed to defeat him. His skin is too thick,” said another villager. Just then, the lion appeared. “Quick, run!” the villagers shouted.
The lion roared loudly, “Roarrrrrrrrrrrr! What do you want?”
“I’m going to defeat you and take your skin to King Eurystheus,” Hercules declared.
“Don’t be ridiculous. No one has ever managed to defeat me,” the lion growled.
Hercules took out his bow and arrow and fired. The arrow bounced off the lion’s thick skin.
“Ouch, that hurt! I told you, you won’t defeat me,” the lion said.
Hercules pulled out his sword and tried to slash at the lion, but the blade bent. Finally, Hercules jumped on top of the lion and squeezed its neck until the lion died.
He took one of the lion’s claws as proof and brought it back to King Eurystheus.
“The first task is finished,” Hercules said proudly.
King Eurystheus laughed, “The first task was easy. It was just a warm-up. Now, for your next task, you must defeat the Hydra of Lerna, a creature with many heads. Each head spits poison.”
Hercules set off again. This time, his friend Iolaus joined him.
“Can I come with you and watch?” Iolaus asked.
“Of course,” Hercules replied.
When they found the Hydra, it swooped down on Hercules. With one swipe of his sword, Hercules cut off one of its heads.
“That was easy,” Hercules said confidently.
But then, to his surprise, two heads grew back in its place.
“I wouldn’t be so confident,” the Hydra hissed. “Every time one head is cut off, two grow back!”
And so, the story of Hercules and his many adventures continued, with each task testing his strength, bravery, and cleverness.
