Aesop and the Jealous Steward

Aesop and the Jealous Steward

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a wise storyteller named Aesop. Aesop was known far and wide for his clever fables, which taught important lessons to people of all ages. Everyone in the kingdom loved Aesop’s stories—everyone except one person: the king’s steward.

The steward was a man who was in charge of managing the king’s household. He was supposed to be helpful and kind, but instead, he was jealous of Aesop. The steward didn’t like how much attention Aesop received from the king and everyone in the palace.

One day, the steward decided to play a mean trick on Aesop. He went to the king and said, “Your Majesty, Aesop has been telling stories about you behind your back. He says that you are not as wise as you think you are.”

The king, who trusted Aesop, was surprised and a little hurt by the steward’s words. He decided to call Aesop to find out the truth.

When Aesop arrived, the king asked, “Aesop, is it true that you have been speaking ill of me?”

Aesop, who was always honest, shook his head and said, “Your Majesty, I would never say such things. But let me tell you a story, and perhaps it will help us understand what has happened.”

The king nodded, eager to hear one of Aesop’s famous fables.

Aesop began, “Once, there was a jealous dog who lived in a rich man’s house. The dog was upset that the master gave more attention to the cat, who was quiet and gentle. The dog, feeling left out, decided to bark loudly every time the cat was near, hoping the master would scold the cat.”

“But instead,” Aesop continued, “the master realized that the dog was just jealous and wanted attention. The master didn’t punish the cat; instead, he gave the dog some extra love, knowing that it was the dog’s insecurity that made him act out.”

The king listened carefully and soon understood the meaning of Aesop’s story. He realized that the steward’s jealousy had led him to lie about Aesop.

Turning to the steward, the king said, “It seems you are like the jealous dog in Aesop’s story. There is no need to be envious, for everyone has their own special talents. Aesop’s gift is storytelling, just as your gift is managing the household. We should celebrate our differences, not let them divide us.”

The steward, realizing his mistake, bowed his head in shame. “You are right, Your Majesty,” he said. “I was wrong to be jealous of Aesop. I will do my best to be kinder and more understanding from now on.”

The king smiled and turned to Aesop. “Thank you, Aesop, for helping us see the truth through your story. Your wisdom is a treasure to this kingdom.”

And from that day on, the steward worked hard to be a better person, and Aesop continued to share his wonderful fables with everyone in the land. The palace was filled with happiness and harmony, all because of the power of a good story.

The End.
