The Poor Man’s Vow

Once upon a time, in a small village nestled at the foot of a mountain, there lived a poor man named Peter. Peter didn’t have much—just a little cottage, a small garden, and a loyal dog named Max. Although he was poor, Peter was a kind and honest man, always willing to help his neighbors whenever they needed him.

One day, as Peter was walking through the forest to gather firewood, he heard a faint cry for help. Following the sound, he found a tiny bird trapped in a thorny bush. The bird had bright blue feathers and was struggling to free itself.

Peter carefully untangled the bird from the thorns and set it free. The little bird fluttered its wings and perched on Peter’s shoulder. “Thank you, kind man,” the bird chirped. “You have saved my life! I may be small, but I can grant you a wish as a token of my gratitude.”

Peter was surprised and delighted. He thought for a moment and said, “Thank you, little bird. My wish is simple: I vow to be honest and good, no matter how hard life gets. Please help me stay true to this vow.”

The bird nodded and said, “Your wish is granted, Peter. Whenever you are in trouble, just remember your vow, and I will be there to help you.”

With that, the bird flew away, disappearing into the blue sky.

Years passed, and life was not always easy for Peter. There were times when he was hungry, times when he was cold, and times when he felt lonely. But Peter never forgot his vow. He remained kind, honest, and helpful, just as he had promised.

One winter, a terrible storm swept through the village. The wind howled, the snow fell thickly, and the cold was biting. Peter’s little cottage was nearly buried in snow, and he had run out of food. Despite the hardships, Peter refused to steal or beg. Instead, he shared the last of his bread with his dog Max and kept his spirits high.

As Peter sat by the fire, wondering how he would survive the storm, there was a knock at the door. When he opened it, he found a traveler shivering in the cold. The traveler was lost and in need of shelter.

“Please come in,” Peter said, offering the traveler his only blanket and the last of his food. “It’s not much, but it’s all I have.”

The traveler gratefully accepted Peter’s kindness and stayed the night. In the morning, as the storm cleared, the traveler revealed himself to be the king of the land, disguised to see how his people were living.

“Peter,” the king said, “you have shown great kindness and honesty, even in your darkest hour. Your vow has brought you much hardship, but also great honor. From this day forward, you shall never want for anything again.”

The king rewarded Peter with a new home, plenty of food, and warm clothes. Peter’s vow had not only kept him true to himself but also brought him blessings he had never imagined.

And so, Peter lived the rest of his days in comfort, never forgetting the importance of honesty and kindness. The little bird’s promise had come true, and Peter’s life was filled with happiness and peace.
